Just (hopefully) saved 5 baby ducks

So, the worst thing happened just now.

As I am walking back from my car, I saw a mama duck with her babies. Like any other human, I immediately pull out my phone to get a picture of the ridiculous cuteness that is currently appearing before me. This quickly changed. As I pulled my phone out, I looked up to see how far they had gotten in front of me.

As I look up,a car kills the mama duck.

Whoever was driving sped away, the car behind them stopped, which was good. I, in shock, had turned and walked a couple paces so I did not have to see, though could still hear, the mama duck flapping in her last minutes. The woman immediately kept the rest of the ducks from entering the road. She also moved the dead duck from the road. She had to go to a meeting, so I stayed with them and called campus police.

Campus police initially said they would do nothing, I got them to bring over a car.

While waiting I saw Vernon, a friend from class. I got him to stay with the babies while I ran back to the office for a box to put them into. As I came back I saw the police arrive. They helped me corral the baby ducks into the box. There were 7, we got 5, the other two evaded us into the brush. I would have gone in after them, however the brambles and my decision to wear shorts kept me from entering. Once in the box, the police told me they had called animal control to come pick them up. Hopefully they can find a new home through them.

Animal Control is taking them to a wildlife rescue facility!
