So, I have been seeing these messages/images popup on facebook all day today. And while I 100% support the movement, I feel like I need to nitpick exactly what this means.
Why do you need to qualify that you are straight to support the cause? I get it that maybe you want to boost the idea that it’s okay for straight people to support equal rights.. But isn’t that an issue within itself? I can’t help feeling like the message behind these isn’t “hey everyone can/should support this cause!” But instead is saying “hey I support these people but I’m no faggot!”While I have no intention of saying this was the original intent, I can’t help but think that the second message is a huge part of why this is getting shared so much. I am straight, and I have a prop 6 (live in MD) sticker on the back of my car, and it isn’t next to some ‘I love pussy’ bumper sticker. It just is.While the cause needs all the support it can get (and if this helps, great). I can’t get past how illuminatory this is, that people still need to qualify their sexual orientation when supporting these issues.
